Even if you don’t understand it and seek to ridicule it, it is much more serious than you think.
„Every time the price goes up, look us up, we’ll be there,“ is an old adage, – never written and not so old – that perfectly describes the behavior of new actors and economic agents who are exposed to the most brutal and effective marketing campaign that a non-government, non-business asset like Bitcoin can pay: that its price goes up considerably.
The recent price action, which led BTC to break its record high price at some exchange houses, also brought a new wave of opinion to the shores of Bitcoin Beach.
I will focus on Venezuela, not because of an act of chauvinism, but because the effect that BTC’s appreciation has had on public opinion has reached certain opinion makers and influencers, who have not wasted time to take the trendy subject and make it a joke, either directly through humor, or from their academic pedestal.
First the people of El Cuartico, then Led Varela and finally Nanutria and José Rafael Guzman. All, and each in his own style, have taken Bitcoin to themselves, adding to their recent routines and shows, mentions of the subject, giving it exposure among their audiences.
Note: this is not a claim against those who take the license of humor to try to make complex concepts like Bitcoin digestible, or to launch criticism against the phenomena of Venezuelan society. In any case, it’s a post-show clarification: no, Bitcoin is not a joke.
Giving a name to the unknown
One common element is that, although the comedians said they had been informed before using Bitcoin as a theme, many were poking around in the dark; poking around from their own ignorance to grab the elephant in the room. Like the blind who go around playing trunk, tusks, legs and then say what they’re playing, each one threw out their own concept of what Bitcoin is.
Naming the unknown is a complex task. When Europeans arrived in what is now America, they didn’t have enough cultural references to account for what they were observing. That’s why this virgin territory was the ideal setting to let your imagination run wild, putting all the European fantasy to live in.
To complete the picture of the real after the discovery of this new continent and its inhabitants, the epistemological operation was delayed, and the new human beings were first infernal bosses product of fantasy and fears themselves, then subhumans unable, and finally, when they became more familiar with the notions of knowledge of that time, acquired their own and alien entity.
This cultural process lasted for centuries. Learning to name what we do not know is not something that is achieved overnight.
Bitcoin is an elephant among the blind or a new continent. We’re talking about a system that contradicts „basic“ notions of our economic knowledge and traditions, such as that money is a creature of the state, that it must necessarily have the backing of an „institutional“ authority, that its issuance respects a process of harmonious economic growth at the global level, or that the possibility of creating new money must be unlimited in order to guarantee the well-being of the economy.
These are annoying concepts, am I going to become a millionaire with Bitcoin? I’m interested. Do you want to show me why Bitcoin is valuable? I’m bored.
Surely, with the same effervescence of the price, some of us have received calls whose only purpose was to see how you can get a piece of that which is soaring, who’s going to want to hear the importance of hard-centralised money, of rules without rulers, and radically scarce? This is where humor makes the most sense.
In terms of humor, we can say the things that we generally refrain from saying, out of fear of judgment or total ignorance, what does it matter? In the end it’s a joke and that’s it. And no, it’s not like that.
„… I spoke in an episode of Bitcoin and I have almost had cryptology fans come to me in my dreams to tell me ‚how it really is‘, I understood: Bitcoin is God in the form of a coin that comes to save us from all the evil that the economy has caused us,“ complained Nanutria after receiving comments on her jokes.
If for your Bitcoin humor routine you have to say that you’re a charlatan and that you „did your homework“ before talking about it, but then you incur a multitude of inaccuracies in your speech, you’re usually willing to receive criticism and even corrections.
But if you shy away from those corrections, then the license of humor you took when you left loses all meaning. Then the routine becomes an onanistic act and the quackery becomes a ridiculous mockery, which is precisely what happened and what derived in such a whining.
Making jokes does not require as co
